Chapter 2 work begins

This blog/newsletter is for sharing the comic and it's creation progress. Unlike a webcomic like GODSLAVE, TO KNOW A WITCH doesn't have a consistent update schedule. I'm working on it chapter by chapter. But, I still want to be able to share the work online. Which is why you can read the entire first chapter here.

With THE IRON BARGE Kickstarter campaign finally over, and an intact GODSLAVE buffer, I can finally carve out time to work on Chapter 2 of TO KNOW A WITCH! Chapter 1 was finished and sent to the printer in such a rush, it's been nice to take a little break from the story to refresh. Although, if you've followed me online the last few months, you know there was no actual work break.

But my schedule is finally starting to settle to the point where I can reliably work on the comic 1 day a week. And considering we'll have IRON BARGE Book One by the end of the year, my hope is to debut Iron Barge and Witch at TCAF 2025!

I used Carey Pietsch's Comic Deadline Planner to plot out what I'd have to do if I wanted to

  1. Have the book ready for TCAF ( which is usually Mother's Day weekend)
  2. Could only work on it 1 day a week.

This sheet is great, and I used it for Chapter 1 as well. TCAF 2025's date AND location still hasn't been announced, so for all I know they could throw it in March and this whole schedule is thrown out the window. But I'll plan for the same date as last year and hope for the best.

Below are the first 8 pages of layouts!

This chapter focuses a lot on Saoirse's first few witch classes and her growing frustration, and introduces a group of Witch Anarchists. We get a lot more 'witchy aesthetic' in this chapter, and my hope is to share a little more about the world and how witches function in it.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but this is my first time laying out the pages in the actual print order they'll appear in. It seems like such a basic thing to consider! But I've never bothered taking the time, and it's already so nice to think about how the pages look TOGETHER, rather than individually. I'll blame it on drawing webcomics for so long.

That's it for this month. Based on the schedule, next month I should have a lot more progress on layouts and start work on pencils!

As a heads up, I post week-to-week updates on Tumblr, am pretty active on Bluesky and post story updates regularly on Instagram!
