Inks, Insomnia and TCAF

Last we chatted, I was working on inks! It was also January! A lot!!! has happened since then!!

Before I get into it, chapter 2 inks are complete! Here's some fun spreads

It's interesting checking back on the last post, and reading the ending paragraph:

As of today, January 30th, I'm not sure when I'll be done with inks. I was following that google sheet schedule to the letter until the kickstarter hit. Finishing the kickstarter has freed up a bunch of time, and I don't have freelance starting until mid-to-late February. So, my hope is to get the bulk of it done before then. But it's a lottt of classroom scenes and then dense forest. Fingers crossed!

And then I had insomnia for three months.

It's an issue I've had on and off for years, almost always triggered by stress. Normally, I'm able to curb it within a week or so with some tried and true methods. But it just wouldn't quit this time. All the while, I was still working on freelance and independent projects. I was able to finish inking Chapter 2 in mid-March. But my brain was absolutely deteriorating trying to keep track of all the work and shows I'd signed up for.

Going through my bluesky posts, I posted on March 18th

And then three days later

I put GODSLAVE, IRON BARGE and TO KNOW A WITCH on hiatus, and I cancelled an upcoming convention I had booked and paid for that week. Which left three freelance projects that I'd already signed contracts for. I ended up going to my parents' place to see a family doctor, who was able to prescribe me something non-addictive to help.

It's now June, and I'm sleeping well, consistently. Two of the three freelance jobs are complete, and I'm back on IRON BARGE and just started GODSLAVE back up again. And this past weekend, I tabled at TCAF!

TCAF is always a blast. I'm lucky enough for it to be my hometown show (I was especially lucky this year for it to be my NEIGHBOURHOOD show), and had a wonderful time with my friends. This was also the show I'd planned to debut TO KNOW A WITCH Chapter 2 at.
When the insomnia was at its worst and I was cancelling stuff left and right, I originally planned to cancel TCAF as well. Not having Chapter 2, I worried I wouldn't have enough new material to justify the weekend. But friends urged me to sit on it. TCAF is such a huge show, I'd still have IRON BARGE and I could always cancel closer to the event if things were still looking bleak.

I'm glad I listened, and I'm glad I still tabled. It wasn't my best year, but it definitely wasn't my worst. That being said, I do think I'll take next year off. Not having Chapter 2 still burned me up, especially when people came by the table to say they got Chapter 1 last year. But they also said the same thing about GODSLAVE. So, next year I'm going to focus on making work and getting books done, then I can return to TCAF hopefully in 2026 with GODSLAVE V3, IRON BARGE 2 and WITCH Chapter 2.

The last post ended so auspiciously about the progress of the book, that I'm wary making any claims about what to expect, haha. But what I can say confidently right now is that WITCH is still on hiatus, at least until I wrap this last freelance project. All that's left for WITCH 2 are colours and letters! I'll write again once I'm in the middle of colouring.
